What is smart outdoor lighting?

Smart garden lighting replaces the simple light switch with intelligent lighting control. This means you can operate your light sources in the garden via an app, automated schedules or simply by voice command.

On the patio, for example, you can create a cosy atmosphere in warm white with outdoor fairy lights, while pedestal and path lights guide you and your guests safely through the garden. Or you can set specific lighting accents with spotlights - putting plants, garden figures or rippling water features in the perfect spotlight.

With smart technology like that from Shelly, your outdoor lighting becomes a flexible play of light: efficient, personalised and controllable to suit your taste.

What do you need to make outdoor lighting smart?

All you need is a Wi-Fi network, the free Shelly app and a suitable Shelly module.

For outdoor light chains, use the Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3 - simply plug it between the socket and the light chain for convenient control.  You can control permanently installed lights with the Shelly 1PM Gen3 if you only want to switch them on and off. If you want to dim the light continuously, the Shelly Dimmer Gen3 is the right choice.

Tip: In our article Dimming LEDs we show you simple solutions and what you should look out for with dimmable lights.

Important: As many Shelly modules are designed for indoor use, you need a weatherproof housing for outdoor use. Practical: Many outdoor lights can be easily retrofitted using internal switches.

Control garden lighting remotely via app

You can conveniently control your garden lighting with your smartphone - whether you're on the patio or out and about. As soon as the Shelly modules are installed and connected to the WLAN, you can switch individual lights on and off directly via the app , dim them or adjust the colour. You can also set individual time schedules in the app, for example, so that the light switches on automatically at sunset. You can also create scenes based on certain conditions, for example: If movement is detected after 10 pm, the path light switches on automatically for 5 minutes. You also retain control from a distance. When you are on holiday, you can control the light in a targeted manner and simulate your presence - this deters burglars.

Saving energy with outdoor lighting

With Shelly, you can control your garden lighting efficiently. You only use electricity when light is really needed. Various functions help you to do this:

  • Schedules: Your outdoor lights only switch on and off at defined times - no unnecessary continuous operation.
  • Motion detector: With the Shelly BLU Motion , the light only switches on when movement is detected, ideal for driveways or paths.
  • Dimming: With the Dimmer Gen3 you can adjust the brightness - less light means less consumption.
  • Light-dependent control: With the sun position function or external light sensor such as the BLU Motion or BLU Door/Window Sensor , the system reacts automatically to daylight.
  • Consumption control: In the app, you can see live how much energy each light source consumes - and can optimise it in a targeted manner. Good to know: The consumption display works with devices that have an energy measurement function, such as models from the Shelly PM or EM series.

Integrating outdoor decorations into the smart home

With Shelly, you can integrate your outdoor decorations into your smart home in no time at all. You can conveniently control lighting for garden figures and water features or fairy lights, which are particularly popular during the Christmas season, via app or voice control. To integrate fairy lights into your smart home, simply plug the Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3 between the socket and the lights. You can use schedules to set the lights to switch on automatically at dusk and switch off again late in the evening. This saves energy, eliminates the need to pull cables and ensures atmospheric lighting at all times - even when you are out and about. When you come home, you are greeted by the lighting atmosphere you need - sometimes subtle, sometimes bright.

Smart garden lighting according to lighting conditions

With Shelly, your garden lighting automatically adapts to the light conditions. Use the sunrise and sunset function in the Shelly app: based on your location, the lights switch on at dusk and off again at sunrise - without the need for an additional sensor. If you want to react even more precisely to real light conditions, for example when it is very cloudy, you can connect an external light sensor. You can install the 1PM Gen3 or Shelly 1L (if the neutral conductor is missing) behind the light switch or in the junction box.

As this involves working on the mains supply, you should have the appropriate expertise - or, to be on the safe side, leave the installation to a qualified electrician.

Making driveway lighting smart: How to do it with Shelly

The easiest way to achieve smart control is with the Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3 . If your driveway lighting runs via an outdoor socket, simply plug the plug between the socket and the light - done.

For permanently connected lights, use the Shelly 1PM Gen3 , for example, installed in the junction box or behind the light switch. This work is best left to an electrician.  Supplemented by the Shelly BLU Motion , the lighting also reacts to movement.

With all solutions, the light switches on automatically at dusk thanks to the sunrise and sunset function.

You can also control the light flexibly when you're out and about - for example, if you're coming home later or expecting guests.

FAQ answers

What do you need for smart garden lighting?

WLAN, the Shelly app and a Shelly module - e.g. the Outdoor Plug S Gen3, which you simply plug in between the socket and the light.

How many watts do you need for garden lighting?

Calculate with approx. 1-3 watts per m² for basic lighting. For accent lighting, 0.5-1 watt per m² is often sufficient. LEDs are particularly efficient. You can save additional energy with dimmable lights.

What do you need to consider with outdoor lighting?

Outdoor lights should have at least IP44 protection - this is sufficient for protected areas, e.g. under the roof. For direct rain, choose models with IP65. Shelly modules are intended for indoor use and require a weatherproof IP66 housing outdoors.

Is it better to switch outdoor lighting on or off at night?

Permanent lighting increases security, but consumes a lot of electricity. Smart solutions with motion detectors, time schedules or the position of the sun save energy and simulate your presence at the same time - ideal against burglars and for targeted lighting.
