What is a WIFI relay?

A WIFI relay is an intelligent switching module that works via an existing WIFI network. It is usually installed invisibly in a flush-mounted box behind an existing switch or directly in the circuit, for example behind a ceiling light. The WIFI relay thus replaces or supplements the classic mechanical switch.

The relay allows you to conveniently control electrical devices such as lamps, shutters or sockets from anywhere using a smartphone or tablet. This is all done wirelessly, for example via the Shelly app or voice control. An internet connection is required to use a WIFI relay.

How does a WIFI relay work?

A WIFI relay combines the classic function of a relay - which switches electrical devices via a control circuit - with modern WIFI technology. With the WIFI relay, switching can be carried out wirelessly via the Internet without having to operate a mechanical switch. The WIFI relay is supplied with power and integrated into the WIFI. To activate it, it is connected to a consumer, such as a lamp or the garage door.

To make the Wi-Fi relay do its job, simply use the Shelly app or send a voice command such as "Switch on light" via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, for example. The Wi-Fi module in the built-in device receives this command and activates the relay, which switches on the connected lamp . Many WiFi relays offer interfaces to integrate them into smart home platforms. This allows you to switch your devices on or off at certain times or when certain events occur, such as rain or darkness.

What do you need a WIFI relay for?

A WIFI relay is used to switch and control electrical devices or circuits remotely via a WIFI network. It combines classic electrical engineering - i.e. the relay - with modern smart home technology and offers numerous practical applications in everyday life.

The function to control and monitor devices remotely via WIFI relays increases comfort and security in your home. For example, you can check whether certain appliances such as the washing machine are switched off, or you can turn down the heating to save energy.

Where can a WIFI relay be integrated?

You are very flexible with WIFI relays: you can integrate them in a wide variety of places in your house or flat. A few examples:

The Shelly 1 Gen3 is a compact WIFI relay that can be installed directly behind existing wall switches or push-buttons in flush-mounted boxes due to its small size. This means you can continue to operate your devices manually or control them via app or automation if you wish. The Shelly 1 Gen3 supports both potential-free and normal switching and is ideal for retrofitting existing installations.

If space is particularly tight at the WIFI relay's installation site, the very compact Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 are ideal. The also very small Shelly 1PM Mini Gen3 also have power measurement on board.

WIFI relays can also be installed in distribution boxes or in the fuse box to switch entire circuits, sockets, groups of lamps or larger loads such as garage doors or garden irrigation systems smartly. If you use a Shelly Pro device as a WIFI relay, you can also mount it on a top-hat rail.

You can also attach the relay directly to the device to be controlled, for example to a socket, a roller shutter control, a water boiler or a ventilation system.

With weatherproof installation boxes such as the Shelly Outdoor Box, you can also install WIFI relays outdoors, for example for garden lighting or irrigation systems. The housing has been specially developed to operate Shelly relays safely outdoors or in damp environments. The relay is installed in the Shelly Outdoor Box and is therefore protected against splash water and dust.

Most Shelly relays support different supply voltages. This makes them flexible for different applications, for example in low-voltage or mains power installations.

Note: The choice of WIFI relay depends on the electrical appliance in question. A specialist must be consulted for advice and installation. You can use the installer search to find a specialist near you.

What are the advantages of WIFI relays?

WIFI relays offer numerous advantages in the home:

Installation is simple: you can install WIFI relays behind existing switches or in junction boxes without much effort. They are so small that they fit into standard flush-mounted boxes. They are controlled wirelessly via the existing WIFI, so you don't have to lay any new cables.

  • Devices in your household that are connected to a Wi-Fi relay can be conveniently controlled from anywhere using a smartphone app or tablet or via voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
  • Automations, schedules and scenarios allow you to set customised routines such as automatically switching lights, heating or other devices on and off. This ensures greater security and convenience and also saves energy.
  • WIFI relays can be integrated into smart home platforms and networked with other devices so that you can also implement complex automation - for example, the light in the hallway should only be switched on if movement is detected after 9 p.m. and either a window or a door is open.

Application examples for WIFI relays in the smart home

With Wi-Fi relays, you can upgrade your home to be smart without much effort. A few examples of the clever use of WIFI relays:

1. you can make your home more secure by switching selected lamps on and off at certain times. This suggests to outsiders that someone is at home.

2. you can raise or lower roller shutters and blinds automatically, for example when it is sunny outside or when it gets dark in the evening.

3. you can control radiator valves , circulation pumps or air conditioners smartly and thus save energy.

4. you can activate automatic garden irrigation systems to water plants depending on the weather.

5. you can switch off appliances such as irons or radiant heaters remotely if you have accidentally left them on.

How does the installation work in the Shelly app?

Once you have installed the Wi-Fi relay, you can easily integrate it into your existing Wi-Fi network via the Shelly app and select devices for use. You can set it up either via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. You can add the desired devices using the "Add device" button or the blue plus sign at the bottom right of the screen.

When installing via Bluetooth, select the desired device from the list displayed and enter the home Wi-Fi network data in the app. You must confirm the addition of the Shelly module, name the device and include an icon image. If you decide in favour of the Wi-Fi connection, select your own network, search for the right device there and add it.

FAQs:

What does a WIFI relay do?

A WIFI relay is a smart, wireless switch for lights, sockets, etc. You control it using an app or voice command - wherever you are.

What connections does a WIFI relay have?

The usual connections are L (phase), N (neutral), I (input), O (output) and SW (switching input). The exact assignment can be found in the instructions for your model.

Can I use Shelly relays without a neutral conductor?

Yes - models such as Shelly 1L or Shelly Dimmer2 also work without a neutral conductor. All others need it.

Which WIFI does Shelly use?

Shelly devices use the 2.4 GHz WIFI(802.11 b/g/n). The signal usually reaches up to 30 metres indoors and up to 50 metres outdoors.

How can I add the Shelly 1 Gen3 to the Shelly app?

After installation, open the Shelly app, tap on the plus symbol and follow the steps - select WIFI, name device, done.
